In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang (“dark-bright”, “negative-positive”) describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary.

Meditative yet space-age music composed for the year 700,000. This is what Houstonian Jerry Davalos AKA Yin Yang Audio had envisioned at the onset of his exciting expedition into the realm of Electronic Music.

He had the pleasure of working with inveterate dubstep labels such as Soulstep Recording (Innocence EP, Sacred EP, Oblivious EP); fLU10 records (Quantum Mechanical EP); multi-genre labels such as NCP Records (Altered States EP) and Dubtribu Records.

I pulled him aside (virtually) to solicit a few answers relevant to the current viral pandemic and his future endeavors.

Who would have guessed that the mix you turned in for this week’s episode syncs perfectly with the current SARS-CoV-2 (the current name of novel coronavirus) pandemic? What are your thoughts on the current situation?
It sure has put everything to a grinding halt! It’s very unfortunate. A lot of people have been impacted financially, physically, and psychologically. Back in January a friend from Beijing enlightened me on the severity of the situation so I began to prepare and spread the word as much as I could. Fast forward to the present, I think everyone is finally getting the message that they will be heroes by staying home. Staying indoors may be a bit boring and it will take some time but it will save lives and keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed. #staythefuckhome
Yes! I feel this mix is filled with the emotional turmoil of the world but still tries to keep a sense of peace and awareness in the midst of all the darkness & chaos.

If you and I are able to get through this unscathed, it put things into perspective how life can be a blue ocean of tranquility one day, that can turn into a cesspool of contamination in a microsecond. The usual subjects we squabble and bicker about, become infinitesimal, ephemeral matters. How do you envision life post corona?
Totally agree, I would hope western cultures become laxer on wearing face masks! It’s okay to wear them. Usually after an event this serious a new era or awakening manifests. We are going through what William Strauss calls a Fourth Turning – we as a society passing through a great and perilous gate in history. Things may change minimally or they may change drastically but we will surely pass through those gates with a new insight on ourselves and everyone around us. I really do hope life progresses in a positive way after all the dust has settled. We need science more than ever now to light the way through a very unpredictable life.

Switching to the positives. Your sound is a stew of mechanical techno-driven broth backed with complex break patterns as the seasoning.  What are the major influences that help you get into the creative process?
I tend to pick up a lot of creativity from visual cues. I spend a good portion of my time just thinking about the cyberpunk genre and typically find myself thinking about a Bladerunner-like world while writing music. I’ll binge watch Angel Cop and be ready to write a mad track about it afterward. Another great influence is the immeasurable possibilities of fusing together techno, drum & bass, dubstep at a higher BPM. There’s something about the blurred lines that I feel helps me create my vision in a more powerful manner.

Are you classically trained? Although it is very subtle, I hear tinges of musicality in your production. If so, do you think it gives you a slight advantage to come up with more production insight? If not, how did you get that “mature” sound?
I know my way around a piano fairly well. I was fortunate enough to be taught the basics of music theory and chord progressions and from that basic knowledge, I now have a creative system that allows me to add a different dimension to my sound whenever I see fit. the right keys placed at the right moments can dramatically change the track. the space between the notes is crucial. when working on something I see what’s possible and trust my ears along the way. I don’t think of it as an advantage because an artist will have the means to bring sound to life no matter what. It’s up to the artist how far down the rabbit hole they want to go in their work.

After the current pandemic subsides, what do you have lined up or you are going to release anything digitally during this World-Breaker contagion?

There is quite a lot to be heard from me after the pandemic subsides. Canceled shows will come back in full swing and I hope to take people on a great journey with uniquely crafted performances. As for releases, I will be part of a compilation album with the great lads from Kornarion, and something very special with ?????? will be released later this year. I will also begin a 2 part series of self-releases (or album) on Bandcamp called “Relics” which will focus on the ongoing development and growth of my sound.
