Muscovite NoRules has been secretly chipping away with quality releases on Cylon, Inception Audio, Ronin Ordinance, Embodiment, and many other curated imprints. However, many of his key contributions are the collaborations with prolific audio aficionados like Gremlinz, Itti, and Fuj.
Your biography throughout the internet(s) is very sparse. Can you expand a little bit on your background?
My name is Konstantin, I was given my namesake after my grandpa. I think I got the love of creativity from him and Chuck Palahniuk’s books.
According to Chuck Palahniuk “You can’t live forever, but you can create work that will live forever”. After the discovery of that quote, I wanted to create))
I was born in a little city, near Moscow called Elektrostal. This industrial, Grey/gloomy town where I was raised left a great impression on my music. In the 90s and 2000s, besides the rise of pop culture, Russia suffered from criminality. In those days I was into Punk, Hardcore ( not electronic ), Hip-Hop ( a little), and Metal. For the longest time I didn’t like Electronic music nor did I tune into Drum & Bass, Dubstep, and House Music. Except for 3-4 Prodigy songs ;))
It was in 2005 that I fell in love with Drum & Bass – more accurately the Neurofunk style. After listening to Evol Intent’s “Us Against The World” mix compilation is when my music life changed. Especially track number 18, Spor – Way of Samurai. Love that one 🙂
After hearing that compilation I try to make music and began my work in that direction.
Did the Covid-19 global pandemic boost your creative juices in any way?
Pandemic coronavirus has given me more time making music because I have 3 jobs: main gig – power engineering, second – tourism ( closed ) :(( third – DJ ( closed also) :((
Where was the mix recorded?
After your suggestion, I was happy and recorded the mix in my flat at night during a heavy snowstorm.
My Lithuanian friend who I shared this music with, describes this special set as “A deep abyss with intergalactic spice”. Can you tell us the idea behind the mix?
The idea of this mix coincides with my artist name – No Rules :)) Rules are meant to be broken. I mixed the different styles that I liked. And your friend is right: it is a deep abyss with intergalactic spice, adventure into the cosmos, searching for new planets ;))
“FACTORY MECHANISM CHARGED AND FED ME THIS DEEP AND BIOMECHANICAL MOOD“
Perusing through your back catalog, I notice that your music tends to be a lot more minimal and deconstructive than many of your peers who play within the 170/85 bpm space. Where do you think that penchant for minimalism comes from?
From my life and work in a factory. They give me this dark cold anthropogenic and cosmic sound at once. Factory mechanism charged and fed me this deep and biomechanical mood ;))
Are you and Itti the new “Dynamic Duo”? In general, you seem to do a lot of mind-melting with a plethora of sonic creators. Can you give me a reason why?
There is a Russian saying “one head is good, but two heads are better” :)). Many examples out there like Noisia, Ruffhouse, BadCompany, Camo & Krooked, Teddy Killerz, Loxy & Resound, etc ….. all fantastic music. I like Itti’s music, his ideas, and his style, I think we are alike in that respect.
What are you up to next?
I continue to make music, on Friday. My girlfriend said she’s pregnant and I’m very happy :)) Next year wait for the new collabs with new producers (confidential ), but I promise it will very cool and unexpected. My new remix for Heatwave ( Onset Audio). New tunes with Itti and I will try to make some music with Khords.
Any words of wisdom?
Good luck all, take care of your health. Believe in dreams and they will come true ;)) Enjoy music, life, and everything around you. Peace ;))
